The Goddard Group

IAAPA Expo booth #1351

Los Angeles-based design firm Goddard Group has unveiled the next phase of its creative partnership with the world's largest indoor amusement park Lotte World which is located in Seoul, South Korea. Announced in October 2012, this multi-project collaboration entrusts Goddard's designers the creation of new lands, attractions, shows, restaurants and retail stores. Four projects have been completed to date, including the addition of three family rides surrounded by newly developed themed environments.

Goddard Group to introduce an entirely new visitor experience at the entrance area of Lotte World in South Korea. The next project is to introduce an entirely new visitor experience at the entrance area, qualified by Lotte World as the world’s first upscale ticketing experience in a theme park. The new 3,500-sqm Welcome Center will eliminate the traditional ticket booths with long flowing ticketing desks, along with a new dream-like garden ambiance. “By its nature, a theme park’s entrance is generally chaotic, so our primary goal is to organize the chaos as best we can, and to put guests in a calming and stimulating multi-sensory environment,” said Taylor Jeffs, the Goddard Group’s Director of Design. “We will employ visceral elements including smells, sounds, and transforming mood-lighting to achieve this effect.“

According to the designers, the experience will be much more akin to that of checking into a luxury hotel, a concept originally developped by Goddard in 2008 during the development of the Six Flags Dubailand project, now abandonned. "With each new project we take on, our goal is to challenge tradition and advance the medium. Here, we realized early-on that the idea of having an inherently-unwelcoming plexiglass barrier between guests and their hosts was antiquated. I think it’s safe to say that what we have created for Lotte World’s new Welcome Center represents the future of the theme park arrival experience," added Taylor Jeffs.

The Goddard Group hopes other amusement parks around the world will be inspired by the trend towards upscale entry experiences. “When you spend tens of millions on an E-Ticket attraction, only a fraction of a theme park’s daily visitors will actually experience it. Yet, a park’s entrance is something that literally every single guest experiences, and also represents the first and last impression that is made. So why has this critical element long remained an after-thought? Our goal here is to change that.” concluded Taylor Jeffs.

Currently under construction, the Welcome Center area is scheduled to open in October.
