SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment acquires Knott's

Soak City San Diego water park from Cedar Fair

Update : 18:03 Published by François Mayné the 21 November 2012, Corporate.
The theme parks operator SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, which owns 10 properties in the United States, announced that it has acquired from Cedar Fair Entertainment Corporation the water park Knott's Soak City - San Diego located in Chula Vista in the south of California.

The park will undergo extensive renovations in the coming months before reopening next spring under a new name: Aquatica San Diego. It will be the third water park of the brand Aquatica after those of Orlando (1.5 million visitors annually) and San Antonio, which opened respectively in 2008 and 2012.

"These parks reflect the highest standard of quality in attractions, entertainment and theming, but the presence of animals makes the experience something truly special. Aquatica San Diego, like its sister parks, will feature guest experiences with a variety of exotic animals," said Jim Atchison, President and Chief Executive Officer of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. "Having animals in our Aquatica parks adds an educational component to a waterpark visit that is both unexpected and enriching."

SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment acquires Knott's Soak City San Diego water park from Cedar Fair. The park will undergo extensive renovations in the coming months before reopening next spring under a new name: Aquatica San Diego.

The property, which has about twenty attractions including more than fifteen water slides, is located 40 kilometers / 24 miles of the SeaWorld San Diego theme park, south of San Diego. "When the gates of Aquatica San Diego open for the first time next June, guests will see what visitors to Orlandoand San Antonio already know: No theme park company can deliver a waterpark experience quite like SeaWorld," said John Reilly, President of the company's San Diego attractions. "Aquatica will be a great complement to SeaWorld and help us continue to bring value to our guests and enhance this destination."

On the side of Cedar Fair Entertainment Corporation, no comment was disclosed on the details and the company said that the transaction will not impact on its other properties in California. “For this particular property, a unique opportunity presented itself to team with SeaWorld to offer a premium product to its guests in the San Diego region,” said Matt Ouimet, president and chief executive officer. “The net proceeds from this sale will be reinvested in our core assets including the multi-year refreshment of our hotel properties in Sandusky, Ohio that was announced earlier this month.”
