Sales up and stable attendance for Compagnie des

Alpes amusement parks during FY 2011-2012

Update : 19:08 Published by François Mayné the 26 October 2012, Corporate.
Compagnie des Alpes (CDA), which operates 15 amusement parks in Europe including Futuroscope, Parc Astérix and Walibi parks, has released its annual consolidated sales for the fiscal year 2011/2012 (October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012). It amounted to €677 million (approx $874 million), up 5.6% on a reported basis and up 3.7% like-for-like compared to the previous year.

Annual sales of amusement parks totaled €296.2 million (approx $383 million), up more 6.1% on a reportedl basis, mainly due to the consolidation of Futuroscope. On a like-for-like, sales rose by 1.8%. If global attendance is slightly down compared to the previous year (-0.5%), the average spending per visitor increased by 2.4%.

If the amusement parks performed well during the first half of the fiscal year, particulary due to outstanding performances during the Halloween season, they experienced a serious slowdown during Q3 (sales down by -9,5%) due to exceptionally poor weather conditions and an unfavorable basis for comparison (Q3 of FY 2010/2011 was up nearly 9% with the re-opening of the water park Aqualibi in Belgium after months of renovation). Q4 (50% of the annual activity), however, was satisfactory with sales up 6.3% as the result of the increase in attendance and average spending per visitor.

In a statement, the company said “Despite strong competitive pressure in this period of economic crisis, the Group has maintained its demanding policy in terms of price yields. This policy is in line with the strategy of asserting the fair value of the CDA offering. The success of this policy was supported by selective and adapted enhancement of the CDA’s product offer. This helped attract a summer clientele in search of the highest quality leisure experiences on offer. “

CDA explains that the most efficient parks during this fiscal year were Parc Astérix which opened a new Egyptian themed area with a Bolliger & Mabillard Inverted Coaster named OzIris, the four Walibi parks which continued their rebranding and the wax museum Musée Grévin in Paris which celebrated its 130th anniversary.

The 1.8% increase like-for-like in amusement park sales is encouraging given the context. However, it will not be enough to fully compensate for the rise in operating expenses attributable to investment and development costs, despite adjustments carried out over the year in response to economic conditions,” added the company.

During this fiscal year, CDA has also decided to withdraw from Bioscope, an edutainment park located northeast of France.

Symbio (Bioscope Joint Association, particularly including the County of Haut Rhin and the Region of Alsace) and the Heritage Promotion Society (Société de Mise en Valeur du Patrimoine or SMVP), a 100% subsidiary of Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, agreed to an amicable termination of the Bioscope Public Service Delegation (DSP) at the end of the 2012 season.

This decision will end the mandate of the company Eco Bio Gestion (EBG), a 100% subsidiary of Compagnie des Alpes, as operator of the site. In structural deficit since its creation in 2006, Bioscope generated sales of €1.1 million in 2010/2011 and negative EBITDA of approximately - €3 million.

FY 2011/2012 results will be published on Wednesday, December 19, 2012. “They should confirm the strength of the Group's business model over the medium-term despite the negative effects of contextual events,” concluded Compagnie des Alpes.
