MACK Rides to deliver Europe's first multi Launch

Coaster to Liseberg in 2014

Update : 15/10/12 - 11h09 Published by François Mayné the 14 October 2012, New.
In 2014, the Swedish amusement park Liseberg will open the first multi Launch Coaster in Europe for a total investment of 200 million Swedish kronor (€23 million, $30 million), the largest investisement of its history. Its working title: Projekt Helix.

According to Andreas Andersen, CEO of Liseberg, the ambition since the beginnings of the project in 2009 is to get one of the best steel roller coaster in the world, just like the wooden coaster Balder (opened in 2003) regularly rewarded in its category. And consequently, Projekt Helix will be one of the longest (1,355 meters/4,455 feet) and fastest (with peaks at 100 kph/68 mph) roller coaster of its kind on the European continent.

The design of the ride has been entrusted to the German manufacturer MACK Rides that has notably delivered Blue Fire at Europa-Park (Germany) and more recently Manta at SeaWorld San Diego (USA). "This will be the most technologically advanced attraction in Liseberg" said Andreas Andersen, "We will getting value for our money, the Launch Coasters of MACK Rides are like Rolls Royces combining comfort, softness and freedom."

The layout of Projekt Helix has been custom designed to fit the wooded and rather encumbered field of Liseberg. The final result will be a series of banked turns, airtimes bumps, helix, steep drops and 6 inversions (2 Corkscrews, Pretzel Loop, Zero-G-Roll, Heartline Roll)l with two launch zones (max 4.2g of acceleration) and a highest point at 41 meters (134 feet). The ride duration will be close to 2 minutes for a capacity of 1,310 riders per hour.

Each train will carry 20 passengers and will be divided into 5 cars with 2 rows of 2 seats equipped with a lap bar. The track will start at the top of the boarding platform of Atmosfear - the freefall tower opened in 2011 - and the 3-D cinema Maxxima will be destroyed to make way for the station. Construction work will begin this winter.

This summer season, Liseberg has not met its target with an attendance of 2.15 million visitors, down 7% compared to 2011. A situation that is not considered alarming by the park as the summer of 2011 was particularly excellent and because the satisfaction rate is up sharply explained Andreas Andersen: "If we didn't get the number we expected, we are very satisfied with the level of satisfaction on the rise. The average spending per visitor also increased despite, or rather because of the fact that we have freeze the price of admission and F&B. Our most popular ride is the roller coaster Lisebergbanan which welcomed more than 1.37 million passengers this year!"

Attendance should certainly rebound in 2013 with another major addition named Kaninlandnet, a 10,000 sqm (107,640 sqft) children themed area with 7 new attractions including a family roller coaster (Stampbanan). This year, the park spent €15 million/$19.5 million in three new rides: Skeep O 'skjo, Liseberghjulet and JukeBox.

Liseberg is one of the most visited tourist sites in Sweden and one of the most dynamic European amusement parks in terms of investment. It has four roller coasters : a steel coaster of Schwarzkopf (Lisebergbanan, 1987), a wooden coaster of Intamin AG (Balder, 2003), an Accelerator Coaster of Intamin AG (Kanonen, 2005) and a Junior Coaster of Zierer (Rabalder, 2009).

Projekt Helix communication plan has already been launched on-line with a promotional website featuring a blog, technical specs, ride renderings, video reports in both Swedish and English.
