Cedar Point removes WildCat as part of the

expansion of Celebration City

Update : 17:10 Published by François Mayné the 6 May 2012, Event.
Cedar Point (Sandusky Ohio) announced this week the removal of the roller coaster WildCat, a Schwarzkopf model eponymous that had opened in 1979. The ride will be scrapped in the coming days to be recycled, just before the season opens on May 12.

This decision occurs as part of the expansion of Celebration Plaza, where will be organized this summer the new night-time show "Luminosity" with live music, dancers, giant screens, lights and special effects. In addition, Cedar Point stated that the coaster ridership was too low and that maintenance costs were increasing.

The Wildcat serie of roller coasters (3 models with different lengths) is the first to have been developed by German engineer Anton Schwarzkopf in the early 60s. Characterized by a layout consisting of straight drops, flat turns and an helix at the end of the track, twenty copies have been shipped worldwide of which only a few are still operational, mostly in the United States. WildCat at Cedar Point was the largest model: a length of 560 meters (1837 feet) and a height of 14.5 meters (50 feet) with 10 cars of 4 persons. The ride had replaced another Wildcat opened in 1970 and transferred to Valleyfair! in Minnesota, and also had been renovated and repainted in 2003.

On the West coast, Six Flags Magic Mountain has welcomed the information very well as it now becomes the amusement park with the biggest number of roller coasters in the world totaling 17 rides against 16 in Cedar Point. The latter said it remains committed to being the roller coaster capital of the world with this statement : "New roller coasters, rides and attractions will always be a part of Cedar Point’s future."

The expansion of Celebration Plaza is one of several initiatives that will beautify the park midways and enhance guests’ experiences. Additional improvements include state-of-the-art lighting packages on Giant Wheel, Millennium Force and Power Tower, a new sound and lighting system along the park’s Main Midway and the re-painting of the Millennium Force and Blue Streak roller coasters.
