Kentucky Kingdom to reopen as Bluegrass Boardwalk
in May 2013
Update : 27/02/12 - 10h49Published by François Mayné the 25 February 2012, New.
The owners of Holiday World & Splashin' Safari - the Koch Family - announced mid-January their intention to resume the operational management of the former Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom closed in 2009 in Louisville, Kentucky.
The board of the Kentucky State Fair, owner of the land and park's facilities, has unanimously approved this week the signing of a lease agreement with Koch Family, and more precisely the siblings Dan and Nathalie Koch with their cousin Kathy Kamp and her husband Michael Kamp - a General Manager at Holiday World - who formed a company to manage the acquisition.
Following this announcement, they stated that the amusement park and its adjacent water park, Splashwater Kingdom, will reopen in May 2013 under a new name: Bluegrass Boardwalk. The Koch Family will invest 15 to $ 20 million and plans to install several new attractions. They also project to hire 800 seasonal and 25 full-time jobs.
“We can’t wait to get started!” says Holiday World's President and Bluegrass Boardwalk’s Dan Koch. “We’ve got a lot of work to do to get the park reopened in just 15 months, but we’ll get it done. We’d like to thank the Fair Board for putting their faith in us and the community at large for their tremendous cheers of support .”
Natalie Koch adds: “We’re bringing our business model of exceptional safety, cleanliness, friendliness and value for families. That means free soft drinks, free sunscreen and free use of inner tubes.”
The next step for the Koch Family will be to secure the financing of the operation and continue the application process for economic development incentives from Kentucky’s Tourism Cabinet. The family has stated that the park will not request public monies from the Kentucky Legislature.
Opened in 1987, Kentucky Kingdom went bankrupt quickly before being purchased in 1989 by Ed Hart. He added several rides and the water park before selling the property in 1997 to Premier Parks group that became later Six Flags. Renamed Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, the park expanded with several rides before the group decided to cease operating it early 2010 due to the rejection of the lease. Ed Hart attempted thereafter to resume the operations of the site unsuccessfully due to refusal by the Kentucky State Fair.
Among the rides still in the park, there are several roller coasters including one of the latest Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop still operational in the world, a double Custom Coasters International Wooden Coaster and a Vekoma Rides SLC Inverted Coaster.
