The German amusement park Fort Fun Abenteuerland, located in Bestwig in North Rhine-Westphalia, was sold on December 23 by Compagnie des Alpes to the German group One World Holding GmbH & Co. KG (One World), a property of the Ziegler family. The subsidiary Grévin Deutschland GmbH has been absorbed and renamed One World GmbH NordrheinWestfalen
The transaction to sell all the shares was valued at 6 million euros. Fort Fun had entered the Compagnie des Alpes (CDA) after the takeover of Grevin & Cie conducted in 2002. The park has hosted nearly 280,000 visitors during the 2010/2011 financial year and achieved a turnover of 5.7 million euros, generating an EBITDA of EUR 560,000 for the same period.
The CDA says that, as for the seven parks sold in January 2011 during "Operation Looping", the site of Fort Fun was not part of the new strategy line of the Group "Great Parks / Great Brands" under the criteria of size, geographical location, business line and the lack of potential for branding. The operation will have a positive but insignificant impact on the results for the year 2011/2012.
For Dominique Marcel, Chairman and CEO of CDA, "This sale is actually a continuation of the operation Looping. It answers both to clarify strategic and optimizing the use of the Group's capital in pursuit of the implementation of the strategic inflection. With undeniable advantages, the German amusement park did not meet the specific criteria for the development of our strategy. In this context the Compagnie des Alpes has seized the opportunity to go out in satisfactory economic conditions."
One World Group, which is 100% owned by Christine Ziegler and his son Matthew, debuted in the amusement parks industry in 2006, particularly with attractions design activities and master planning. It operates today as a group that includes One World Resort, One World Hotels & Resorts, One World Entertainment and OneWorld Studios, the creative studio which we have already spoken on NewsParcs.
One World has been studying for several years the possibility of the implementation or the recovery of an existing amusement park in Germany . It will move its headquarters to Fort Fun and announced it will implement an important development plan based on the concept of a resort for short stay. Indeed, the village of bungalows "Davy Crockett Camp" is part of the Fort Fun area.
Matthew Ziegler said: "The entertainment industry has always fascinated us. We are delighted to have acquired Fort Fun, it is perfect for our expansion plans. We thank the Compagnie des Alpes for this assignment done smoothly. Fort Fun is a family business now, and is an ideal addition to our portfolio."
Among the first decisions for the 2012 season: extra opening days, additional opening hours, new entertainments and some "innovations", all with several ride renovations and new attractions.
