TEA's experience design conference SATE 2013

debuts this week in Savannah, USA

Update : 23:19 Published by François Mayné the 29 September 2013, Event.
The non-profit organization Themed Entertainment Association is organizing its 9th annual conference on experience design SATE 2013 from October 3 to 4 at the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia, USA.

SATE brings together professionals specializing in creating themed experiences for visitor attractions, whether it is in theme parks, museums, science centers, historic attractions, world fairs or live entertainment productions. About 200 international designers, producers, technical designers, architects, operators, integrators, suppliers and students will attend a comprehensive speaker program made up of case studies, testimonials, Q&A and roundtable discussions.

SATE '13 will be hosted by the Themed Entertainment Association October 3-4 in Savannah. After considering the topic of cultural diversity during last year's edition at Disneyland Paris, SATE will look this time into the theme of 'What's Next?'. "SATE is an opportunity for creative thinkers, producers, resource providers and decision makers within the Themed Entertainment Industry and beyond to learn about projects and explore topics that inspire and focus our work. In 2013 we will look at “What’s Next” – inspired by the setting and the mix of attendees, one can’t help but leave full of new ideas and ready to innovate on their next project – whatever it might be," says TEA President Christine Kerr of BaAM Productions.

Co-chaired by Aram Ebben (principal in charge of lighting design at exp, Inc.) and Stefan Lawrence (graphic designer/show writer at Stefan Rules!), the 2-day program will be divided into four main sessions: Storytelling, Architecture, Technology and Experience (which is the acronym for SATE). Featured speakers include Liz Gazzano and Roger Gould (Pixar Animation Studios), Don Marinelli (co-founder of Carnegie Mellon Entertainment Technology Center), Asa Kalama (Walt Disney Imagineering), Bryan Boehme (Christie), Cecil Magpuri (Falcon's Treehouse), Chris Conte and Paul Kent (Electrosonic) and Dave Cobb (Thinkwell) among many others.

One thing we've been talking a lot about – and in particular with Pixar coming on board – is what the future of creative collaboration looks like. Increasingly, creatives and techs are working hand-in-hand to create the future of themed entertainmen," says SATE '13 co-chair Stefan Lawrence. "A big theme with Pixar's talk will be Pixar's culture of collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas, and how to encourage that playful exchange of creativity in the way we work now. This is a big part of "What's Next" as we've been developing our conference content.”

The experience design conference will be presented at the Savannah College of Art & Design. The Savannah College of Art & Design offers substantial curricula in the field of Experience Design, with industry veterans such as George Head and Mike Devine on faculty and among the TEA leadership. "The affiliation between TEA and SCAD coupled with the acceleration of TEA's NextGen initiative to actively foster recruitment of the next generation of industry professionals makes SCAD an ideal location for SATE '13," explains Christine Kerr. “We believe that this new evolution for SATE and TEA – partnering with an academic institution to present a recognized industry event – is a natural next step in the growth of the TEA and the industry our members represent.

Christine Kerr adds: "The conference will explore what’s coming and how it will shape content, be impacted by products and services, leverage tools and technologies, influence design and engage the next generation of guests. The last point is particularly important for designers and for owner/operators looking forward – how to entertain tech-savvy kids and their parents, hang on to the 18-34 year olds and engage the growing numbers of Baby Boomers who are retiring and looking for things to do in their leisure time; considering what’s “Next” for them, and how we engage them as “Next Generation”.

For more information, please visit SATE'13 website to find all details about sessions, speakers and lodging opportunities. It is still possible to register for this unique event that professionals of the experience design should not missed for any reason.

NewsParcs is a media partner of the conference. Sponsors of the event are: Christie, SCAD, Walt Disney Imagineering, BRC Imagination Arts, Jack Rouse Associates, Rethink Attractions, Electrosonic, Nth Degree, Color Reflections and Stefan Rules!
