Genting Malaysia Berhad, a company member of the Malaysian conglomerate Genting Group formalized in late July the signing of a licensing agreement with the American film production company Twentieth Century Fox that plans to open a Twentieth Century Fox theme park in 2016 at Resorts World Genting, one of the world’s largest entertainment destination resort.
Located about an hour's drive from the capital Kuala Lumpur, Resorts World Genting accommodates on an area of about 1,490 acres/6,000 hectares two amusement parks (including one indoor), a water park, many tourist attractions and recreation activities, six hotels, several theaters and business convention centers, a shopping mall, a casino and a golf course. With about 20 million visitors welcomed annually in the last two years, the site is a major tourist destination in Malaysia.
The proposed Twentieth Century Fox Theme Park, the first of its kind in the world, will be built on the ground of the current outdoor amusement park (opened in 1978) on a dozen hectares/25 acres for an announced investment of 400 million ringgit, ie approximately 123 million US dollars. According to the promoters, guests will enjoy of about 25 rides and attractions (including dark rides, thrill rides, kiddie rides, water rides and media-based attractions) all inspired by some of the most popular FOX blockbusters such as Ice Age, Rio, Life of Pi, Alien, Predator or Night at the Museum. A daily parade featuring animatronic characters from the films mentioned above as well as several shops and themed restaurants will also be part of the visitor experience.
The park being developed for both families and adults, Resorts World Genting anticipates a significant growth in the number of visitors from Malaysia, neighboring countries and internationally. “Twentieth Century Fox is one of the world’s largest producers and distributors of entertainment content in the world,” said Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Chairman and Chief Executive of Genting Malaysia Berhad. “The FOX brand is popular throughout the world because the studio has earned a reputation for quality, creativity and longevity. We’re honored to partner with Twentieth Century Fox to realize the vision of a world class integrated resort.”
Among the five majors of the U.S. film industry, Twentieth Century Fox is the fourth to turn towards the theme park industry after Disney, Universal, Warner Bros. and Paramount. “For the first time, audiences will soon be transported into the worlds of their favorite Twentieth Century Fox properties. Brought to life by our partner Resorts World Genting, this theme park marks the launch of our global location based entertainment strategy,” commented Jeffrey Godsick, President of Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products.
With the increase of projects associated with intellectual properties - a strong trend in the theme park industry -, the film studios, creatives and other rights holders are now highly approached by operators. DreamWorks has eg recently entered into several licensing agreements for the use of these characters in various projects of parks and tourist attractions in the United States, China and Russia, as well as Paramount for similar projects in Spain, the United Kingdom and Jordan. Cartoon Network (a subsidiary of Time Warner) and Marvel Entertainment (a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company) have also granted license agreements for projects such as Cartoon Network AMAZONE Waterpark in Thailand or IMG Theme Park in the UAE.
This new major project once again reminds to our industry that Asia is today the most dynamic region of the world in terms of development of attractions. According to experts, the growth in the sector there is such that it could exceed in 2015 the North American market hitherto regarded as the global benchmark.
