The California-based company DreamWorks Animation SKG, whose main activity is the production and distribution of animated films and television series, has signed a license agreement with Russian property developer REGIONS GC that will develop in Russia a series of indoor theme parks showcasing the studio franchises.
These DreamWorks parks are scheduled to open in 2015 in the cities of St. Petersburg, Moscow and Yekaterinburg. They will be part of large shopping centers that REGIONS GC conceived as full leisure destinations with movie theaters, concert halls and hotels in addition to retail and dining offer.
REGIONS GC will design, build and manage each property that will propose visitors to enjoy themed areas, attractions, entertainment, shows and meet & greet with famous characters from DreamWorks Animation, including from the franchises of Shrek, Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda and future productions such as Turbo which will be released worldwide this summer.
This alliance is not insignificant for DreamWorks whose recent productions have been major commercial successes in Russia, six of them being now ranked among the ten biggest hits in the history of animated film industry in the country. "Russia is one of the most important markets in the world for us," said DreamWorks Animation's Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Katzenberg. "All of us at DreamWorks Animation are extremely excited to work with REGIONS CG to be the first Hollywood studio to create not just one, but three theme parks in Russia. These parks are going to be groundbreaking cultural hubs that will give families the chance to truly enter the world of DreamWorks."
"DreamWorks Animation parks are ambitious projects unprecedented in Russia and the rest of the world. The foundation of our success lies in the DreamWorks team's wealth of experience in the field of entertainment and the experience of the REGIONS Group of Companies in developing and managing retail and entertainment centers," commented Amiran Mutsoev, Member of the Board of Directors of REGIONS GC.
DreamWorks Animation seems determined to diversify its activities in the field of theme parks after having successfully launched theater productions and musicals. Last year, the company has announced two other licensing agreements for the same type of indoor amusement park with developers in the United States (American Dream Meadowlands in New York, 2014) and China (Dream Center in Shanghai, 2016).
