The emir of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has recently approved the development of a new leisure destination of 10 billion AED (approx €2.1 billion or $2.7 billion) in Jebel Ali, a town located about thirty kilometers from the capital of the Emirate.
The project, which was entrusted to the real estate developer Meraas Holding, plans the construction of five theme parks connected around a district of shops, restaurants and hotels with the goal to increase the offer of leisure and entertainments in Dubai for both residents and tourists.
The first phase of work, already announced in December 2011, includes the opening of Dubai Adventure Studios, a theme park based on movies and developed in partnership with Hollywood brands. With an opening scheduled for late 2014, It will serve as a starting point for the development of the other parts of the entertainment destination.
The four parks that will follow the latter will have very different themes. One of them will draw from the productions of Bollywood in partnership with the Indian film industry while another will be a marine life park with various attractions, live shows and animal encounters. Finally, the remaining two theme parks will be dedicated for the first to children and for the second to the experience of a night safari in the desert.
“Meraas has been working with several industry experts to bring together a powerful mix of components that fulfill the need for a pure entertainment-based destination,” stated Abdulla Ahmed Mohammed Al Habbai, President de Meraas Holding. “The new initiative comes in response to Dubai’s status as a top global touristic destination which will contribute to the growth of the economy. With work on critical infrastructure including transport links gaining speed in the emirates, Dubai’s projections for the tourism sector are optimistic and well-founded. We expect the comprehensive offering to set a new benchmark within the leisure and entertainment industry and offer tourists one more reason to visit Dubai.”
The projects of theme parks and leisure destinations in Dubai are popping again after several years of relative calm reflecting the slowdown of the global economy that has greatly affected the financial and real estate initiatives in the Emirate.
If the most iconic project of Dubai - the Dubailand complex with giant theme parks operated by big names of the industry - always seems stalled, others have recently been formalized like the family entertainment center MARVEL Adventure that will be part of the IMG Theme Park destination located in the heart of City of Arabia (see our previous articles in the "Related articles" section below).
