Plopsaland De Panne to invest €12 million for a new
Belgian theme park Plopsaland De Panne, located along the North Sea near the French border, today unveiled its plans for the 2013 season. Property of the Plopsa Group, it will invest €12 million (about $15,7 million) in the construction of a new themed area and a theater hall, two projects that will be followed in 2014 by the opening of an hotel and an indoor water park.
The new themed area will be dedicated to the universe of Vicky the Viking, one of the most popular cartoon characters of Studio 100, the media group behind Plopsa. Representing an investment of €6 million (about $7,8 million), it will feature two new family rides (for a combined capacity of 1,000 people per hour), a restaurant, a snack and a merchandising shop.
The first ride will be a Splash Battle which design was entrusted to the German manufacturer MACK Rides (product name: Interactive Boat Ride). The boats will be themed like Viking ships and equipped with water cannons. The circuit will be 155 meters (508,5 ft) long, while water effects will be installed throughout the ride to make the experience even more fun for the visitors.
The second addition will be a Disk'O Coaster designed by the Italian manufacturer Zamperla. The ride will combine the rotation of a circular gondola - on which passengers sit facing outward - and a motion of back and forth on a linear track which the 16-meters/52.5-feet high ends are inclined. This 92-meters/302-feet long track will feature an airtime bump and the gondola will reach the maximum speed of 70 kph/ 43.5 mph.
Just like the previous projects of the park, a particular attention will be paid by Plopsa artistic team to create an immersive environment with rides perfectly integrated into the whole. The area will feature a lake and a Viking village, surrounded by greenery and rocks. Plopsa has nevertheless not yet wished to communicate the names of the companies in charge of theming, contracts being not finalized at the moment.
The theater hall, named Groot Theater, will be built in the entrance area of the park next to the indoor themed area Mayaland. Representing also an investment of €6 million, it will offer 1,300 seats in a luxurious setting for seasonal shows as well as special performances (Studio 100's concerts and musicals, etc.) during the off-season. This theater will also be an asset for the department of corporate events.
With these new investments, Plopsaland De Panne will more than likely consolidate its position as first amusement park in Belgium. The Plopsa Group - which also owns and manages Plopsa Coo and Plopsa Indoor Hasselt in Belgium, Plopsa Indoor Coevorden in the Netherlands and Holiday Park in Germany - has welcomed over 2.7 million visitors in 2011.
Construction work of the new themed area and the theater will begin in December for a scheduled opening next summer.
