Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk selects Maurer Söhne
for a Spinning Coaster to open in 2013
Update : 29/08/12 - 09h32Published by François Mayné the 28 August 2012, New.
The amusement park Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, one of the oldest in the United States, announced that it will open in 2013 a new roller coaster and more precisely the first Spinning Coaster of northern California for an investment of $5.5 million (about €4.4 million). The ride has been named Undertow.
Park management has selected the German manufacturer Maurer Söhne for this project. It will supply a SC 2000 circuit that has the particularity of being compact and be installed without foundations. The ride will be 430-meters (1,410-feet) long and 15.5-meters (50-feet) high and will feature a Immelman turn (sort of horseshoe banked at 80°), a 360° spiral, a slalom section and several banked turns.
Each car is equipped with lap-bars and can hold 4 passengers (seated back to back by 2). They rotate freely on the track depending on the weight and position of these latter, for a maximum speed of 60 kph (37 mph). There will be a total of 7 cars for a theoretical hourly capacity of 990 people. “A spinning coaster is a very unique ride experience, we know our visitors are going to love it,” said Boardwalk community relations director Kris Reyes. “Every ride on Undertow is different, you can definitely expect the unexpected.”
The SC 2000 is the oldest model of the series of Maurer Söhne S-Coasters. Originally developed for the fairgrounds, several parks owners have acquired it since its introduction in the late 1990s. Similar rides opened for example in Lagoon (Utah), Seabreeze (New York) or Waldameer (Pennsylvania).
Undertow will replace another steel roller coaster, Hurricane, that opened in 1992. Built by the Italian company SDC (now defunct), it will host its last passengers in a few days and will be then moved to another U.S. park : Western Playland in the state of New Mexico.
Located along the Monterey Bay since 1907, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is oldest amusement park in California still active. With its typical setting of "seaside piers" of the early 20th century, it is currently nominated for the Applause Award which will be awarded in November. The park offers a mix of modern and ancient rides (2 of which are considered National Historic Landmarks) as well as numerous activities of all kinds, such as a mini-golf, arcades games or a bowling.
