The German amusement park LEGOLAND Deutschland, owned and operated by Merlin Entertainments, celebrates its 10th anniversary with a world first : Flying Ninjago, one of the 3 Sky Fly sold by Gerstlauer Amusement Rides in 2012.
Under the theme of LEGO® Ninjago line of sets, Flying Ninjago invites visitors to experience a flight on the back of a dragon. Each of the riders settles in a individual gondola equipped with two wings that can be manipulated up and down with the arms. When the ride starts, the gondolas - which are fixed on a beam - are lifted by an arm that rotates up to 8.5 rpm. Then the riders have the choice either to enjoy an original flight in the air, or to rotate their own seat by using the wings like a wind turbine!
LEGOLAND Deutschland chose a Sky Fly 12 with 12 gondolas for a hourly capacity varying between 240 and 360 persons per hour according to the number of rides. The gondolas are equipped with over-the-shoulder restraints and the minimum height to ride is 1,30 m (about 4.2 ft)
Here are the main Sky Fly technical specifications :
Base Area (Center Column) : about 2,5 x 2,5 m (~ 8.2 ft)
Diameter : about 9,5 m x 13,5 m (~ 44.0 ft x 31.0 ft)
Height (gondolas lifted) : about 22 m (~ 72.0 ft)
Flight Path Diameter : about 30 m (~ 98.0 ft)
Number of revolutions: 8.5 rotations per minutes
Connected load : about 110 kW
Electric drive system
User interface with visualization of the ride for control, service and maintenance
In May, LEGOLAND Deutschland will launch a second novelty once again under the theme of LEGO® Ninjago with an extension of the Miniland area in which visitors walk around LEGO® models. Hans Aksel Pedersen, General Manager of the park, stated "With these novelties and a large program of entertainments to be organized throughout the season, we wish to thank all our visitors that came here since 10 years. We are looking forward to showing them what the future holds for LEGOLAND Deutschland! "
The two other Sky Fly opened their doors at Nickelodeon Universe, Minnesota, USA (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Shell Shock) and at Nigloland, France (Air Meeting) on 17th March and 7th April.
