The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man reopens

in High Definition

Update : 18:14 Published by François Mayné the 12 March 2012, New.
After a few weeks of work and months of development, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man dark ride at Islands of Adventure (Universal Orlando Resort) reopened to the public on March 8.

Opened in 1999, the ride is considered as one of the world’s most popular theme park experiences and one of the most inovative dark rides of its generation. Inspired by the famous Marvel superhero Spider-Man, it combines various patented technologies including simulators in motion, 3-D projections of synthesized images on giant screen, sets and special effects.

Universal had announced in 2011 that The Amazing Adventiures of Spider-Man would be “upgraded” in high definition, offering then a new and enhanced experience to visitors. All animations are now in 4-K digital HD format - one of the highest resolutions available - which is giving more realism to characters and sceneries. Action is now more lifelike than before and Universal Creative team added hundreds of new details and effects. For the first time ever, Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee also makes a cameo appearance inside the attraction by being animated in 3-D and placed in several scenes inside the new animation.

The ride also gets a highly-sophisticated 3-D projection system delivered by German specialist Infitec, while visitors now experience the new details through all-new 3-D “Spider-Vision” glasses, complete with new lenses made of dichroic filters for amazing color and clarity.

In order to make the whole ride experience even better, some of the screens have been enlarged to more than 14 meters (4 stories) tall and just as wide. The special effects - including heats blasts and water surges - as well as the motion of the ride vehicles have also been precisely calibrated to match the animation.

Others enhancements include a new on-board audio system upgraded from 8-channel to 16-channel and a new original music score so riders will be even more immersed in the action. At last, Universal stated that there are hundreds of new details to discover in the attraction : lighting, sets, graphics, props and even scenic detail have been updated to further enhance the animation’s tremendous improvements.

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man was so wonderful before,” said comic book icon and Spider-Man co-creator, Stan Lee. “But now – with all of the new technology that’s been added – it is indescribably spectacular.

We took an incredible theme park ride experience and made it even better,” said Thierry Coup, senior vice president of Universal Creative. “If you have been on this attraction before, then it will seem like the first time. If you have never been on it, then you will simply be blown away.
