The Beach Waterpark, located in Mason nearby Cincinnatti and Dayton, Ohio, announced plans to close for the 2012 season. The owners explained in an official statement that the decision was the result of a challenging competitive and economic climate and changing patron entertainment habits.
Opened in 1985, The Beach Waterpark has operated at a loss during the past several years. It has more than likely suffered from competition driven by his neighbor King Island, a Cedar Fair Entertainment property located a few hundred meters away, whose Soak City waterpark announced an expansion plan of $10 million this year.
“The Beach Waterpark management team is extremely saddened to make today’s announcement,” said Ralph Vilardo Jr., authorized spokesperson on behalf of The Beach Waterpark. “We have been proud to provide entertainment and employment to Southwest Ohioans for more than 27 years. Like many businesses these days, we had to make the difficult decision to close after concluding that further investment to support the business cannot be justified.”
The park offered more than 50 rides and attractions on 15 hectares (35 acres) in a tropical themed environment. It has employed more than 15,000 people and has been visited by an estimated 7.5 million visitors.
The owners, however, stated in the local press that they did not reject the idea of a re-opening in 2013. Equipment maintenance will be continued pending the opportunity to make new investments or to sell the park to a third party.
