It is in less than one month that will start the 20th anniversary festivities of Disneyland Paris, a celebration that the Resort promises to be "sparkling and giant" with "an explosion of colors and lights".
Along with various entertainments and a re-visited parade, the main addition of this anniversary will be the launch of a unique night show in Europe : Disney Dreams! This will be presented every evening at the Sleeping Beauty Castle and will invite visitors to dive into a colorful world directly inspired by famous Disney animated features.
Peter Pan will be the conducting thread of the show. His shadow will escape at the beginning of the performance before hitting the ''second star to the right'', the way to Neverland. The shadow will then be sent through famous Disney sceneries to meet characters of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Jungle Book, Rapunzel or The Hunchback of Notre Dame ...
Disney Dreams! project was entrusted to Imagineer Steve Davison, the current Creative Director and Vice President, Parades and Spectaculars of the Creative Entertainment division of Walt Disney Imagineering. He was notably responsible for the design of another night show, World of Colors, presented since 2010 at Disney California Adventure (Disneyland Resort, USA).
"It’s going to be phenomenal, we are going to take the Sleeping Beauty Castle and truly transform it in a magical way using all the latest technologies that you have ever seen" stated Steve Davison in a presentation made to the shareholders of Euro Disney SCA in February.
Indeed, Disney Dreams! will feature a multitude of special effects, starting with high-definition projections on the Castle, thanks to video mapping technology. "When you start playing with this techonology, you realize you can really do a lot of things! The castle can be transformed into the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, or may appear to waver from left to right by simply projecting images on volumes. It's really dazzling!" explained Dave Davison.
Besides this, Disney Dreams! will also use two water screens as well as several fountains installed to the left and right of the Castle bridge. "Disneyland Park will be the first Disney park in the world to get fountains in the Castle moats. There will be water jets of various sizes with colorful backlight. All will be programmed to be used as a support to the story of the show, it's a great addition!" said Steve Davison.
Disney Dreams! will also get pyrotechnics, lasers and a lifelike "second star to the right" that will be unveiled at the top of the Castle only during the show. "The star is so bright, we can see our shadows on Main Street and I'm sure you will also see it from downtown Paris!" added Steve Davison with humor.
Finally, the music is specially composed by Joel McNeely who has already made a dozen soundtracks for Disney, including the series of Tinkerbell computer animated films between 2008 and 2010. The score was recorded with an orchestra in the famous Abbey Road studios in London.
The first public performance of Disney Dreams! will be held on April 1st. "I promise you it will be spectacular and you will have heart-warming," concludes Steve Davison. "This is the kind of wonderful things that we love to do at Walt Disney Imagineering!"
