Kennywood announces Black Widow, a Zamperla
Giant Discovery, for 2012
Update : 19:49Published by François Mayné the 16 December 2011, New.
Kennywood, located in West Mifflin nearby Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania, USA) announced yesterday that it will add a new ride for 2012 : Black Widow. This will replace the 76 meters (251 feet) tall Intamin AG Freefall tower currently for sale that opened in 1997.
Kennywood has choosen the Italian manufacturer Zamperla and acquired a Giant Discovery pendulum ride. The experience will start with riders sitting in outward-facing suspended seats that form a giant circle. With legs dangling freely, each rider will be secured with a shoulder restraint. The giant circle will then begin to swing in a pendulum motion while rotating counterclockwise.
At the peak of the swing riders will reach a height of 44 meters (146 feet) with an angle of 120 degrees above the ground and experience a feeling of weightlessness coveted by thrill seekers. Kennywood stated that “the counterclockwise rotation and pendulum motion creates a variety of different sensations depending on a rider’s specific position. The combination of both elements results in a unique ride experience every time!”
With an height requirement of 132 cm / 52” tall, Black Widow will stand at 27 meters (90 feet) tall and will propel riders back and forth at 110 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour). The total ride capacity will be 40 riders for a theoritical hourly flow of 880 persons.
“Black Widow will have a combination of height, airtime and thrill factor,” explains Kennywood
General Manager Jerome Gibas. “Kennywood offers a great variety of ride experiences and Black Widow will provide our guests with a new dimension of thrill. ”
Kennywood is part of the Palace Entertainment group which owns and operates 40 parks in the United Stated, including water parks, family entertainment centers, theme parks and animal parks. Palace entertains millions of guests annually and is one of the largest park operators in the country.
