Phantasialand gets green light from German

authorities for a €100-million expansion plan

Update : 20/12/12 - 11h01 Published by François Mayné the 18 December 2012, Corporate.
The German theme park Phantasialand, located in Brühl in North Rhine-Westphalia, has received the green light from local authorities for an expansion plan of 19 hectares (approx 47 acres) after a lengthy administrative procedure that lasted almost 10 years.
Phantasialand gets green light from German authorities for a €100-million expansion plan

This political decision is a compromise considered satisfactory by the Löffelhardt family, owner of the park, which had originally submitted an expansion plan of 30 hectares (approx 74 acres) but had to revise its ambition downward facing the reluctance of several environmental organizations, government agencies and neighborhood associations.

The expansion plan will be divided into two distinct areas. A first of 17.5 hectares (approx 43 acres) located west of the theme park will be devoted to the construction of a water park, one or more hotels with a total capacity of 4,000 beds, a theater/concert hall of 6,000 seats and a new parking lot. The second will be located east on about 1.5 hectare (approx 4 acres) and will include the construction of an edutainment space, a playground, a picnic area, warehouses as well as housing and a nursery for Phantasialand's staff. This expansion plan will thus not concern the theme park, contrary to what was envisaged initially.

Phantasialand gets green light from German authorities for a €100-million expansion plan

With a current area of 28 hectares (approx 69 acres), Phantasialand has arrived at its maximum capacity because it is landlocked between several roads and a residential area. In recent years, the Löffelhardt family has demonstrated ingenuity to develop the park by favoring the replacement of old attractions and facilities by new ones and by saving as much space as possible.

Despite these constraints, Phantasialand has metamorphosed since 2001 with the addition of two themed hotels (Ling Bao and Matamba), two new themed areas (Wuze Town and Deep in Africa) and some twenty new attractions including the spinning coasters Winja's, the inverted coaster Black Mamba, the river rapids River Quest, the thrill ride Talocan and more recently the interactive dark ride Maus au Chocolat. In 2013, a new flume ride called Chiapas will open, replacing the two previous ones that have been razed earlier this year.

Phantasialand is today the second most visited theme park in Germany with about 1.8 million visitors a year, way behind Europa-Park and its 4.5 million visitors. With this expansion plan, the Löffelhardt family plans to invest €100 million (approx $132 million) and to hire about 830 people including 230 seasonal workers.

The administrative journey will now continue at a higher level with the urban regional planning authority. The Löffelhardt family will have to wait 3 months before to know if appeals are filed. It is only after that they will be able to acquire the land to be cleared before starting any construction.
