Village Roadshow Theme Parks unveils Wet'n'Wild

Las Vegas to return in 2013

Update : 09/10/12 - 22h08 Published by François Mayné the 8 October 2012, New.
Last week was held in Las Vegas (Nevada, United States) the 32nd Annual Symposium and Trade Show of the World Waterpark Association, the largest international non-profit organization dedicated to the safety and profitability of the waterparks industry.

Village Roadshow Theme Parks unveils Wet'n'Wild Las Vegas to return in 2013

It is during the final day of the event that an unexpected announcement was made by the Australian operator Village Roadshow Theme Parks, the latter stating that waterpark chain Wet'n'Wild will return to Las Vegas in 2013, nearly 10 years after it disappeared from the landscape of the city.

Wet'n'Wild Las Vegas actually replaces another waterpark project announced in mid-2011: Splash Canyon Waterpark. Earlier this year, the opening date of the latter had been postponed to 2013, ostensibly for operational reasons. The promoter SPB Partners has since found new investors including former glories of tennis Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, Thomas and Mack Development Group and Village Roadshow Limited (51% ownership) which will manage the daily operations of the property.

If the future location of the park has not changed - the land is leased to the real estate developer The Howard Hughes Corporation in the southwest of the city - the ambition of the new partners has been revised upwards and the investment increased accordingly to $50 million (about €38.5 million), nearly double of what was originally planned.

The new master plan will cover an enlarged area to 17 hectares (vs 10 previously) and will feature 25 slides and attractions for both thrill seekers and families, including a giant wave pool, a multi-level children water playground and a lazy river. Among the waterslides, the Canadian manufacturer WhiteWater West will provide a Constrictor slide (raft ride composed of a series of spirals with alternating flume size) and North America's first Rattler slide (a raft ride composed of several giant cylinders).

“We are very excited to bring this amazing new water park to the perfect city that is Las Vegas,” said Tim Fisher, chief executive officer of Village Roadshow Theme Parks. “The park will feature some of the world’s most incredible slides and will offer an experience unlike anything Las Vegas residents and visitors have ever seen before."

Wet ‘n’ Wild Las Vegas has the potential to entertain more than 650,000 guests annually, providing them with a world class day of family fun. Together with Phoenix and Hawaii, Village Roadshow Theme Parks will soon entertain well over a million guests at our North American water parks each year,” said Fisher. “The local government and business support we have received for this project has been unprecedented. In particular, County Commission Chair Susan Brager has offered her full support to this project, and we are confident this will be another hugely successful attraction for Las Vegas.”

Village Roadshow Limited is the largest attractions operator in Australia where it manages for example the Warner Bros. Movie World theme park and the waterpark Wet 'n' Wild Water World in Brisbane, on the Gold Coast. The group welcomes over 4 million visitors each year, operates two other Wet'n'Wild waterparks in the United States (in Hawaii and Phoenix) and has other business activities, including film production. Another Wet'n'Wild waterpark project is expected to open in Sydney in 2014.

The original Wet 'n Wild Las Vegas opened its doors back in 1985 near the resort Sahara Hotel & Casino and was permanently closed in 2004. Since then, despite its status as the "city of entertainment" and the excellent weather conditions of the region, Las Vegas has never welcomed again a waterpark, at least until May 2013!
