Europa-Park purchases a hundred-year old carousel
Update : 30/04/12 - 15h56Published by François Mayné the 29 April 2012, New.
The German theme park Europa-Park has just purchased a carousel-lounge of 1909 from Ecomusée d'Alsace, a museum located in Ungersheim in North-East of France. The latter had declared its intention to separate from this carousel-lounge in 2011 and had tried to auction it for €1.2 million (about $1.6 million) without finding a buyer. The amount of the transaction with Europa-Park has however not been communicated.
Built in the city of Angers, the Eden Palladium carousel has traveled in the north of France for over 30 years under the ownership of the Family Deneyer before being stored in Switzerland and then bought by the museum in 1990 where he was installed as part of an exhibition. Surrounded by a covered structure, with wooden decorations, benches and mirrors, the Eden Palladium is a true symbol of fairground art of the beginning of the 20th century and is one of the four copies of carousel-lounge still existing in the world.
The ride is currently being disassembled and will be rehabilitated then brought up to TÜV standards in the coming months. It will reopen to the public in November in a new building at the Europa-Park's main entrance. With this acquisition, the park hopes to revive a ride of the past and save a heritage that might have been lost abroad, while making a parallel to the Mack Family's ties with the showman world. Moreover, Europa-Park wanted to emphasize the Franco-German friendship, the rooting of the park in Alsace (50% of the staff live in France) and the number of French visitors (about 1 million each season) to justify the purchase.
Europa-Park is one of the most dynamic theme parks in Europe by investing each year in expanding its offer with new rides, entertainments or services. This season, it has opened a GCI wooden rollercoaster, WODAN Timburcoaster, and is preparing to open its fifth hotel in June: the Bell Rock.
