Canada's Wonderland, located in Vaughan (Ontario, Canada), will be next year the host of one of the highest and longest rollercoaster in the world : Leviathan.
Scheduled to open in May 2012, this Giga Coaster designed and produced by Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard will dominate the landscape of the park with a track long of 1672 meters and a lift at about 93.3 meters, more than 20 meters above Behemoth, a Mega Coaster also built by B&M in 2008. Cedar Fair Entertainment, park's owner and operator, has decided to invest $ 28 million, about 19.4 million €, in this new ride.
The layout, Out & Back, will start with a downhill with a slope to 80° where the trains will reach speeds of approximately 148 km/h . This will follow by a Barrel Roll (banked turn) of 50 meters high, a long flat portion with a high speed curve at an average of 122 km/h, a camelback of 55.7 meters and a overbanked hammerhead at 115° that will rise 45 meters above the park's front gate area. Trains will then continue with another high speed curve (about 96 km/h), a second camelback of 37.7 meters and another curve that will lead to brakes and return to the station, a rather long portion where we would have imagined a few extra camelbacks...
The ride time will be about 3 minutes and 28 seconds, and the attraction will be equipped with 3 trains of 32 passengers divided into 8 rows of 4. Decorated fiberglass with steel coaches and lapbar restraints, these trains will be painted with the scales and eyes of the Leviathan, an imaginary sea monster mentioned in the Jewish and Christian traditions, like Behemoth.
The park has released three videos unveiling a teaser clip, a point of view simulation and an off-ride simulation of Leviathan :
“Leviathan will be our 16th coaster and now positions Canada’s Wonderland as one of the top three coaster destinations in the world.” said Raffi Kaprelyan, Vice President and General Manager, Canada’s Wonderland. “We will go higher, longer, and faster than ever before when we launch Leviathan in 2012. With the addition of this new coaster and our diverse collection of rides, shows and attractions, we continue to show why Canada’s Wonderland is the destination of choice for those seeking world class thrills and family entertainment."
Before the opening, curious visitors can now follow the progress of construction via the promotional site - leviathan.canadaswonderland.com - where they will also find details on the ride and a blog.
